Sell a junk car in Sauk Village, where IL-394 becomes a freeway

Is the tow free if I sell my junk car in Sauk Village?

Yes. Top Dollar Junk Cars will buy a junk, wrecked or non-running car anywhere in Sauk Village, from the mobile home parks near Torrence Avenue to the industrial lots on Sauk Trail. The tow is free, never shaved off the figure, and you're paid as the car goes on the truck.

From our Alsip yard it's about 20.1 road miles: a mile of Cicero Avenue, about 10.9 on the Tri-State, then about 5.9 down the Calumet Expressway (IL-394), which turns into a full freeway at Sauk Trail. As the crow flies, about 16. The village code comes first here, because it spells out exactly what counts as hidden from view.

Sauk Village's Chapter 74 and a car that won't run

Article X of Chapter 74 deals with abandoned and inoperable vehicles, and Article VI with snow. Here is what the village code says, section by section, and what it means if your car has stopped running.

SectionWhat it saysWhat it means for a dead car
§ 74-281A vehicle is inoperable once it has been unable to run on its own for 7 days or more. Anywhere not enclosed by a garage counts as public view, and a carport, tent or awning is not a garage.A car under a carport or a fabric shelter is still in public view
§ 74-287A dead vehicle, or parts of one, kept where the public can see it, whether on a public lot or private ground, counts as a nuisance and may not be stored or parked there. A running vehicle without valid title or registration counts too.Lapsed registration can turn even a car that starts into a problem
§ 74-281On a street or other public way, a vehicle counts as abandoned when it's undrivable, or when it has sat unmoved for 24 hours or more and appears desertedA stalled car parked on the street meets the first test straight away
§§ 74-282(c), 74-284Abandoned and inoperable vehicles are towed after prior notice, and the owner gets 7 days to request a pretow hearing, held within 14 daysThe notice starts a 7-day clock for asking for a hearing
§ 74-160Once snow on a stretch of street passes 2 inches, no parking there until it's cleared, apart from 10-minute passenger and 30-minute freight stops; the rule starts over with each new 2 inchesThe plow comes, and a dead car can't get out of its way
§§ 74-157, 74-158Signed snow emergency routes close to parking when the village president declares a ban; if snow starts between 11pm and 6am with no announcement, cars may stay until 7amOn a snow route, the grace period ends at 7am
§§ 74-245, 74-247A village license for a passenger car costs $30, expires June 30, and doubles in price if bought lateSell before July and there's no new sticker to buy for that car

We found no general overnight street-parking ban in Chapter 74. That sets the village apart from Flossmoor, off to the northwest, where every street closes to parking from 3 to 6am. In Sauk Village, snow and the 7-day inoperable rule are what catch a dead car out.

Houses and driveways

Most homes here are houses. 73.7% are single-family detached and another 10.3% attached, and 64.6% of the village's 3,070 occupied homes belong to the people living in them (Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020 to 2024). Get a figure first from the quote form up top. For a driveway pickup, tell us whether it's garaged, under a carport or out in the open; under § 74-281 only the garage keeps it out of public view. Our checklist for junking a car with a local yard covers plates, keys and the glovebox before the truck comes.

Mobile home parks

About one home in ten is a mobile home (10.4%). Three parks, Weatherstone Lakes, Candlelight Village and Carlisle Estate, sit near Lincoln Highway and Torrence Avenue. Check with park management before pickup day, then give us the park's name and your lot number. Once management has agreed, we load right there.

Work lots along Sauk Trail

The LogistiCenter at Sauk Village is a 525-acre industrial park along Sauk Trail and IL-394, and Sauk Pointe Industrial Park sits on Sauk Trail west of the expressway. A car that died in a work lot, or several old company vehicles at the same site, can go in one visit once the site has said yes. Tell us which entrance to use.

Low spots after heavy rain

Cook County's hazard mitigation plan names two places where streets flood in heavy rain: 221st and Yates, and 223rd Place and Strassburg. Cars caught in that water still sell. Say how deep it got when you call, since that decides what's left worth paying for.

Beyond the Sauk Village line

The truck reaches you by running IL-394 south from its northern end, the interchange with I-80, I-94 and the Tri-State in South Holland. That village also gives an inoperable car seven days and starts its snow limit once the street has more than 2 inches. Northeast, past Lynwood, Lansing handles snow with an odd and even side rule and lets a junk car sit 10 days on private property before it breaks the code.

Lynwood also runs up to the state line. Across it, in Munster, a scrap sale follows Indiana's title rules, and that page explains what Indiana asks for. Every other town we serve is in our full pickup list, and the yard itself is on the Alsip page.

Before you sell a Sauk Village junk car

My car still runs, but its registration lapsed. Does Sauk Village treat it like a junk car?

It can. § 74-287 makes a running vehicle without valid title or registration a nuisance if it's kept in public view, the same as a dead one. If you'd rather sell it for scrap, tell us which papers survive, whether that's the registration, an insurance card or a bill of sale you kept. The state's rules settle which of them a scrap sale can rest on, and we confirm that on the call. See selling a car without its title first.

It snowed overnight and my dead car is on a Sauk Village snow route. Do I have until morning?

Only until 7am, and only if the snow started between 11pm and 6am without an announced ban (§ 74-158). After that the route has to be clear, and a dead car can't be shifted, so call as early as you can. We answer from 6am.

The village put a tow notice on my car. How long have I got?

Not long. Under § 74-282(c) the car can be towed after that prior notice, and § 74-284 allows 7 days to request a pretow hearing, which is then held within 14 days. Call us the day the notice appears; same-day pickup is often possible.

Under a carport still counts in Sauk Village. Call us.
