Sell your junk car in South Holland, where 159th turns into 162nd

Who will buy a junk car in South Holland with no tow bill?

Top Dollar Junk Cars does. We take scrap, crashed and non-running cars from every part of South Holland, and towing each one away is on us. When you sell a junk car in South Holland, the money changes hands at pickup, cash or a digital transfer, and a same-day collection is often doable.

South Holland was settled in 1846 by immigrants from South Holland in the Netherlands, and by the 1940s it was known as the Onion Set Capital of the World. Our directory of collection towns lists it with the rest. Below, the page tracks the drive from Alsip, then the landmarks, then the village rules that shape a pickup.

From the Alsip yard to South Holland, road by road

The drive is about 11.4 road miles, or about 9 miles in a straight line. Road by road, here's why each one matters when you sell a junk car in South Holland.

Cicero Avenue (IL-50)
About a mile from our storefront at 11630 S Cicero Ave to the tollway. Every South Holland run starts here.
Tri-State Tollway (I-294)
About 4.4 miles on the tollway. Its Chicago Southland Lincoln Oasis service plaza is in South Holland, a handy reference if you're describing where you are from the tollway side.
159th Street (US-6)
The truck leaves the tollway for 159th Street. Exit 73 of the Bishop Ford Freeway (I-94), also on US-6 at 159th, is in South Holland too.
162nd Street (US-6)
The final stretch, about 1.3 miles. South Holland numbers its streets three blocks ahead of Chicago, so Chicago's 159th Street is the village's 162nd. If a map app and your mail disagree, give us the address the way the village writes it.
Sibley Boulevard (IL-83)
Also inside the village limits, and the road that ties South Holland to Dolton and Harvey.
State Street and Cottage Grove Avenue
Secondary roads through the village. Cottage Grove meets 170th Street at one of the spots that floods, covered below.

The code also bars truck traffic in specified areas (Sec. 10-49 of Chapter 10). We haven't seen its street list, so if a no-trucks sign stands on your block, mention it and the driver can plan around it.

Landmarks, low ground and quiet Sundays

South Holland is almost all houses: 95.0% of homes are single-family detached and owners live in 82.8% of the occupied ones (Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020 to 2024). That puts most cars in a driveway, which is where village rules want a parked car anyway. The quote form by the opening answer starts with the car, then asks how to reach you.

For directions, the main campus of South Suburban College is in the village, and the Lincoln Oasis sits on the tollway. South Holland is also a dry village, and most businesses, travel-related ones aside, close on Sundays.

The village was built on low ground near the Calumet River, de Laage Prairie in Dutch, and properties beside the Little Calumet River and Thorn Creek flood over the banks; 2008 brought record flooding. The county's hazard mitigation annex for South Holland names trouble spots at 157th and Woodlawn West, 170th and Cottage, the 162nd and Wausau underpass, 173rd and Dodson, and the stretch from Gowens Park and Little Calumet Park into the Pacesetter subdivision. We still buy cars that have been through those floods.

South Holland rules to know before you sell a junk car

We found no blanket overnight parking ban in Chapter 10 of the village code. These are the rules that do apply:

  • Seven days and it's inoperable. A car that has been unable to run under its own power for 7 days is inoperable; one in disrepair, or unmoved for 7 straight days and apparently deserted, counts as abandoned (§ 10-174).
  • Not on any property. No public or private property may hold an inoperable vehicle, whether parked, stored or simply left, and one that does is a public nuisance. A car inside a building is exempt, as are antique vehicles 25 years or older, among a few other exceptions (§ 10-175).
  • Removal after a week. The police chief may order removal after a 7-day wait with notice and a hearing, or straight away if the car is a traffic hazard (§ 10-178).
  • Plates and sticker on the street. A car standing on a public street needs a current license plate and, if it's registered in the village, a current village sticker, or it can be impounded (§ 10-155.1).
  • Driveways only at home. On a home lot, parking is allowed only on a designated driveway or parking area, never on the lawn, planted areas or a porch (§ 10-160).
  • Snow over 2 inches. Any street allows only 3-minute passenger stops or 30-minute freight stops, from the snowfall until 8 hours after it ends and through removal (§ 10-152).
  • Alleys stay passable. A parked car leaves 10 feet clear and doesn't block a driveway (§ 10-148).

Missing the title? Tell us which papers you do have, be it the registration, a bill of sale or just an insurance card. Illinois rules govern which of them can carry a scrap sale with no title, and we'll confirm once we're on the phone; how no-title sales work explains more.

Next door, Dolton, directly north, gives a dead car 10 days before it's a nuisance, three more than South Holland. Harvey, on the west side, shares US-6 with the village. To the east, Calumet City and Lansing both border South Holland, and Lansing's snow rule makes cars switch to the odd or even side of the street by 8 a.m. The truck starts from Alsip, whose own rules are on the Alsip page. Still weighing other kinds of buyer? Who buys junk cars on the Southside compares them.

What South Holland sellers ask us

My car is at a South Holland repair shop. Can you collect it on a Sunday?

Check with the shop before you pick a day. Most South Holland businesses, travel-related ones aside, close on Sundays, so choose a day the shop is open, settle anything you owe them and tell them we're on the way.

Our car sat in floodwater near Thorn Creek. Is it still sellable?

Yes. Floodwater is hardest on the electrics and the interior, so say whether it reached the seats or rose over the dash, and we'll price the car with that in mind.

Should I renew my South Holland sticker in June if the car is going anyway?

Sell it before the June 30 expiry and you won't be buying a fresh sticker for a car that's gone. Late purchases cost more: 50% extra in July, and $100 extra from August 1 (§ 10-69).

I live on the Parkside Avenue permit stretch. Does that change anything?

Mention it when you call. Parkside Avenue from 173rd Place to Thornwood Drive is resident permit parking on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (§ 10-161), so the driver needs to know whether the car is in a driveway or at the curb on that stretch.

Sticker due June 30? Sell the car first.
