Top dollar for a Munster junk car, Ridge Road to the Little Calumet
Will you pay top dollar for a junk car in Munster, Indiana?
Yes. Top Dollar Junk Cars takes junk, wrecked and non-running cars from anywhere in Munster, between the Little Calumet River on the north edge and the streets off Ridge Road, and pays top dollar figured from the car. The tow is free, you're paid at pickup through Zelle, Cash App or cash, and our offer doesn't expire.
Munster sits on the state line, with Lansing just across it to the west. One expressway joins them (the Kingery becomes the Borman at the line), yet a dead car is treated differently on each side, papers included. The table below lines the two towns up. Both are in the directory of towns we serve.
Munster and Lansing, side by side
Each town has its own code: Munster's abandoned and junk vehicle article and street parking rules, and Lansing's junk vehicle, notice and snow sections. Here's how they compare for a car that has stopped running.
| Topic | Munster, Indiana | Lansing, Illinois |
|---|---|---|
| Papers to sell a junk car | The title or a BMV duplicate works at any age; failing that, a BMV certificate of authority, but only for a car 15 or more model years old. Younger than that with neither, we can't buy it. | Tell us what you have (bill of sale, registration, insurance card). Illinois rules decide which papers work for a scrap sale, and we confirm it on the call. |
| Dead car on your property, in view | Counts as abandoned after more than 20 days if it can be seen from public property; a tarp or cloth cover doesn't change that (Sec. 12-41) | May not stay more than 10 days unless it's in an enclosed building (§ 38-245) |
| Dead car on the street | Abandoned once it's dismantled or inoperable there, or unmoved for over 24 hours; a 3-day order to remove it, then a tow (Secs. 12-41 and 12-43) | May not be left on any street (§ 38-244); in most cases the police chief gives 72 hours' written notice before an impound (§ 38-246(d)) |
| Snow of 2 inches or more | Every vehicle off every town street, except one signed side in the pocket bounded by Manor, Hohman, Ridge Road and the north town line (Sec. 54-189) | By 8 a.m., park on the side whose house numbers match the date, even or odd; homes with a driveway must use it (§ 38-219) |
Read the property row and Munster looks easier, with 20 days against Lansing's 10. Read the first row and it's the other way round. Indiana's paper rule is state law: IC 9-32-9-29 (changed by SEA 65 of 2024) makes it a Level 6 felony to buy a car newer than 15 model years when the seller has neither a title nor a certificate of authority, and IC 9-22-5-18 is the seller's half of it. A duplicate title is $15 and the certificate application (State Form 55018) is $4, both on the BMV's list of fees. Tell us which papers you hold and we'll confirm the route on the call. For the Illinois side, our page on selling without the title explains what to have ready.
Loading a junk car in Munster
From the yard it's about 20 road miles, or about 15 miles as the crow flies. The truck rides the Tri-State to its southern end, takes the Kingery east to the state line, where it turns into the Borman, and comes off at Calumet Avenue. Calumet is Munster's main north-south artery and becomes US 41 just north of the Borman; from there it's side streets such as Fran Lin Parkway. Trucks bound for Sauk Village leave that route before the Kingery and head south on the Calumet Expressway (IL 394), and since Sauk Village is in Illinois, its paperwork works like Lansing's, not Munster's.
This is the Town on the Ridge. Ridge Road follows the Calumet Shoreline, an ancient lakeshore, and Town Hall, the police and fire headquarters and the post office all stand on it, which makes it the easiest landmark for directions. Munster numbers its addresses on the Hammond system, so give us the town name along with the number.
Most cars here wait on a driveway: 75.7% of Munster homes are detached single-family houses and 87.0% are owner-occupied, with 12.8% in apartment buildings of five-plus units (Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020 to 2024). For a condo or apartment lot, square it with the association or manager, then book. The street is the risky spot, because the first 2-inch snow has to clear every car off it, dead or not.
Water is the other local hazard. The Little Calumet River marks the north edge of town, and in September 2008 the remains of Hurricane Ike pushed it over its banks and broke a levee near Calumet Avenue and River Drive, in the northwest quadrant. A flooded car still sells to us. Mention the water on the call, since it changes which parts keep their value.
Thinking of a private sale first? Munster bars parking a car on a street to show it for sale, or to wash, grease or repair it outside an emergency (Sec. 54-184), so it would have to sell from the driveway. Our piece on junking a car versus selling it privately weighs the two, and the figure we give you stays open while you decide. When you're ready, the form at the head of this page takes the details.
The Indiana neighbors differ again. Highland, directly east, is stricter, allowing just 5 days in public view, with a sticker as the warning before a tow. Hammond, across the Little Calumet to the north, gives 30 days under its junk vehicle ordinance but counts an older inoperable car as abandoned after 3. Each of these runs starts from where our yard is, on Cicero Avenue in Alsip.
Munster questions, answered
Does Munster's snow rule apply if the dead car is in my driveway?
No. Sec. 54-189 is about town streets: after 2 inches or more, every vehicle has to come off them, except in the area bounded by Manor, Hohman, Ridge Road and the north town limits, where cars clear one signed side. On the driveway, the 20-day junk vehicle rule is the one to watch.
My old car has antique plates. Does Munster's junk vehicle rule still cover it?
No. Sec. 12-42 exempts antique-plated vehicles from the abandoned and junk vehicle article, along with sale lots, commercial service facilities, zoned scrap yards and vehicles of active-duty military members. If it's a junk car all the same, we'll still make an offer; Indiana's title law decides the paperwork either way.
My car died in Munster's business district. Can it stay there overnight?
Not on the street. In the central business district, Sec. 54-183 limits parking to 30 minutes between 2 and 5 a.m., so a dead car breaks it every night. If it's in a store's lot, ask the owner first, then tell us where it sits.
