Sell your junk car in Oak Brook, wherever it's parked
Do I have to move my junk car to sell it in Oak Brook?
No. Top Dollar Junk Cars picks up wrecked and dead cars where they sit, from a subdivision driveway to a shop near 22nd Street, so a junk car in Oak Brook can be sold without getting it running. There's no towing charge, and we pay as we load it: cash, Zelle, Cash App or another app.
Oak Brook began as Fullersburg and incorporated in 1958, largely through Paul Butler. Today it's 8,163 people (2020 Census) on 8.30 square miles, split between DuPage and Cook counties. From our Alsip yard the trip is about 19.4 road miles, nearly all of it (about 14.7) on the Tri-State, which runs through the village and meets I-88 at exit 138. The truck then takes Ogden Avenue (US 34) and Spring Road. The straight-line distance is about 15 miles. The page goes spot by spot from here, because where the car sits decides which village rule applies.
A dead car in an Oak Brook driveway
In Oak Brook, the car is most likely at a house. The village is mostly residential subdivisions, and of its 3,373 homes, 80.1% are single-family detached; owners live in 91.1% of occupied homes (Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020 to 2024).
The clock that matters is in Title 6, Chapter 4, which calls a vehicle abandoned if disrepair has left it undrivable, or if it has gone 7 or more straight days unmoved and unused and looks deserted (§ 6-4-1). Under § 6-4-3, an abandoned vehicle can't remain on a property beyond 7 days unless it's inside an enclosed building. A closed garage counts. An open driveway doesn't.
Fixing it where it stands is off the table too, since the zoning code bans vehicle repair work in off-street parking areas except emergencies (§ 13-12-3(M)). When you call, tell us whether the car is in the garage or out on the drive, and which way it's facing.
Townhouse and condo parking in Oak Brook
A smaller slice of the village lives in shared buildings. Just 7.7% of Oak Brook homes are single-unit attached, the townhouse kind, and 12.2% share a building with other households, almost all of those (11.8% of homes) in buildings with five or more units. Those homes come with shared lots and association rules.
The 7-day limit in § 6-4-3 applies to any property, a condo lot included, so a dead car in a guest space is on the same clock as one in a driveway. Get the management office or the HOA to sign off first, then tell us the building and the space number. Once they've agreed, a shared lot is no harder for us than a driveway.
Selling a junk car in Oak Brook from a shop or office lot
The north end of the village is the commercial side. Oakbrook Center and a run of offices and stores line 22nd Street and the I-88 corridor, and companies such as Ace Hardware and Portillo's have their headquarters here. Butterfield Road (IL 56) leaves its mainline in Oak Brook, with straight-through traffic continuing as 22nd Street, and Kingery Highway (IL 83) has its 31st Street interchange in the village.
If the car gave out in one of those parking lots, ask the property's management first and let us know the entrance the truck should use. For a car sitting at a repair shop, let the shop know the date and clear any bill with them beforehand; then we load from their lot. The 7-day limit in § 6-4-3 makes an exception for a lawfully operated business that needs the vehicle. Our figure doesn't expire either, so you can weigh it against the repair estimate before you decide.
Why an Oak Brook street is no place to wait
Because no car may be there overnight. § 7-1-1314 bans parking on all of Oak Brook's streets between 2 and 6am, any day of the year, with only emergency vehicles excepted; the code names police protection, street cleaning, and leaf and snow removal as its reasons. A car that won't start breaks that rule every night it sits out front.
Two more sections close the street off. § 7-1-1317 forbids parking a car on the street to advertise it for sale, which rules out the curbside private sale. And § 6-4-4 lets police remove and impound vehicles that appear to break the abandoned-vehicle chapter, under the state's towing law (625 ILCS 5/4-201 and 4-214).
Oak Brook's neighbors are a little looser. In Westmont, to the southwest, the same 2 to 6am window allows a car up to 15 minutes, and in Downers Grove, to the west, the police can give express oral permission. Oak Brook offers no such allowance for an ordinary car. Closer to our yard, Summit enforces its overnight ban only on three posted streets, and Ogden Avenue, the road our truck takes into Oak Brook, runs through Cicero as Historic Route 66.
Before the day, think about papers. Title gone missing? Run through the documents you still hold when you ring; Illinois rules settle whether they'll carry a scrap sale, and we tell you on that same call. See what to do without a title. How our free pickup works walks through the day itself, and the price form at the top gets a figure started. Oak Brook is one of the farther towns among the pickup areas we list, and our home village of Alsip has its own page.
What Oak Brook owners ask about a dead car
My car's plates expired and it's parked in my Oak Brook driveway. Is that allowed?
Not on open ground. § 6-4-2 makes it unlawful to leave a car, truck or trailer without current plates from Illinois or another state on any open premises, and a driveway is open. A closed garage is a different matter. Either way, we buy cars with expired plates; mention it on the call.
Part of Oak Brook is in Cook County. Do you collect on that side?
Yes. The village spans DuPage County (York and Downers Grove townships) and Cook County (Proviso Township), and our pickup area takes in suburbs in both. The county line makes no difference to the pickup.
Will you take an old heavy-duty pickup that's parked at my Oak Brook house?
Yes, we buy trucks as well as cars. Village zoning (§ 13-12-3(I)) bars storing a vehicle over 8,000 lb gross weight on a residence-district lot unless it's enclosed or serving the lot, with RVs excepted, so a big truck that no longer works shouldn't stay there. Give us the model and year when you call.
