Top dollar for Westmont junk cars, and the rules next door

Will a Westmont junk car fetch top dollar?

It will. Top Dollar Junk Cars prices a Westmont junk car at top dollar wherever it stopped, from an apartment lot near the Metra station to a driveway off Ogden Avenue. The tow costs you nothing, and Zelle, Cash App, another app or plain cash changes hands at pickup.

Westmont is a DuPage County village of 24,429 people (2020 Census) on 5.11 square miles, nearly all of it in Downers Grove Township. Its neighbor to the west is the village of Downers Grove, and the two treat a dead car differently enough that a side-by-side is the quickest way to see where you stand.

Westmont and Downers Grove: two codes on a car that won't run

Both are DuPage villages and both clear their streets overnight, but the details differ. The Westmont rows come from its code of ordinances; the Downers Grove rows from the village's municipal code.

RuleWestmontDowners Grove
Overnight street parkingNothing over 15 minutes from 2 to 6am on any public street, parkway, right-of-way or public lot (§ 78-308(a))No vehicle on any village street from 2 to 6am unless the police give express oral permission or it's on an authorized driveway (Sec. 14.98.1)
SnowOnce 2 inches or more is down, no parking on any street while removal goes on and until 8 hours have passed since the snow ended (§ 78-306)A snowfall of at least 3 inches inside 24 hours triggers a 48-hour snow emergency: no parking on streets or public lots between 9pm and 6am, and violators are towed (Sec. 14.98.4)
A dead car on private propertyA nuisance to keep junk cars, or vehicles not in active use, in public view on any premises (§ 38-82(7))A nuisance to keep a car that hasn't been able to run on its own for 10 days straight, anywhere outside a building, with narrow exceptions (Sec. 13.7(e))
Repair workDismantling, repairing or painting a vehicle outside a shielding structure is a nuisance (§ 38-82(7))Only minor repairs on residents' own vehicles in residential parking areas (Sec. 28.7.080)
Showing it for saleNot parked on a street (§ 78-311)Residents may offer their own car for sale from their own off-street parking space (Sec. 28.7.080)
Homes in buildings of 2 or more units50.8%, with 43.0% in buildings of 5 or more29.7%, with 27.0% in buildings of 5 or more

In practice, Westmont's snow trigger comes sooner, at 2 inches against 3, and its test for a dead car on private land is whether people can see it, with no day count attached. Downers Grove gives a clearer clock, 10 days, and no exception for a car kept out of sight unless it's inside a building. Our Downers Grove pickup page goes deeper into that village's winter rules. Top dollar for your Westmont junk car, from lot or driveway

From the Alsip yard, the truck takes the Tri-State for about 10.6 miles, Wolf Road for about 1.9 and 55th Street for about 4.0, then turns onto Cass Avenue for the last half mile. That's about 18.7 road miles, or about 15 miles direct. Ogden Avenue (US 34) crosses the village, and its interchange with Kingery Highway (IL 83) is inside Westmont. Westmont station on Metra's BNSF Line is another easy landmark.

Half of Westmont's homes sit in multi-unit buildings, and only 55.1% are owner-occupied, so the car may well be in a shared lot. Quincy Station, the 94-unit building that opened near downtown in 2022, is the newest example. In a shared lot the management's say-so comes first. Get it, then give us the building name and the car's spot in the lot, and we'll load there, often on the day you call.

At a house, watch the grass. § 78-317 makes it unlawful to park on any unpaved surface other than a driveway, even on your own property, so a car pushed onto the lawn to free up the drive is already out of line. Tell us if that's where it sits, and the driver will know to expect grass under the wheels. Alleys have a rule as well: § 78-309 wants 10 feet left clear and driveway entrances unblocked.

As for our truck, § 78-302(c) keeps commercial vehicles off streets next to homes and parks except for a delivery or a service call; our stop lasts only as long as loading the car takes. If the car is at a business on one of the village's Class III truck routes in § 78-164 (Plaza Drive, Chestnut Avenue, Burr Oak Drive, Blackhawk Drive and Westmont Drive), give us the business name and the lot entrance.

No title? List whatever ownership papers you've kept. Illinois rules decide whether any of them works for a scrap sale, and we go through that with you by phone before anything is booked; the no-title route goes into it. Comparing our number with another buyer's? Read how junk car buyers handle haggling first, then use the form at the top to get our figure.

North of Westmont, Oak Brook bans street parking from 2 to 6am with no 15-minute allowance. West past Downers Grove, Ogden Avenue carries on into Naperville, where a car without a current plate or sticker is presumed inoperable. The rest of the towns we cover are in our list of pickup towns, and our yard's own village, Alsip, is covered on its pickup page.

Westmont permit and parking questions

Is a Westmont overnight permit area a safe place for a dead car?

Not for long. Those areas take quarterly permits for weekdays only, and § 78-308(b) treats a vehicle left there 48 hours or more as stored, which isn't allowed. A car that can't move reaches that limit fast.

My car is on Blackhawk Drive. Do different overnight hours apply?

Yes. Between Ogden Avenue and Chestnut Avenue, Blackhawk Drive's no-parking window runs from 2 to 8am, two hours longer than the rest of Westmont (§ 78-308(a)(1)).

Can I get a one-night permit while I wait for the pickup?

Possibly. Under § 78-308(a), Westmont's police chief may authorize single-evening permits, up to five a month, so ask the police department. A permit covers a night, though, and the car still has to go.
