Top dollar for Hammond junk cars, papers first

Who pays top dollar for junk cars in Hammond, Indiana?

We do. Top Dollar Junk Cars pays top dollar for junk, wrecked and dead cars in every part of Hammond, Robertsdale and Hessville included, and works the figure out from the car itself. Towing is free, you're paid as it goes on the truck, and we check Indiana's title rule with you on the very first call.

Hammond is the only Indiana city that shares a border with Chicago, and one of the Indiana stops among the towns on our pickup list. Streets, snow and tow routes all matter here. Indiana's paperwork law matters more, so that's where this page starts.

Papers first: what a Hammond junk car sale needs

Selling a junk car in Indiana comes down to two documents, and the car's age decides which of them will do. One is the certificate of title, or a duplicate from the BMV, listed at $15 in the BMV's published fee chart. The other is a BMV certificate of authority; the application is State Form 55018 and costs $4. A title covers any car. The certificate is limited to cars aged 15 model years or more.

The bottom right cell is the one that catches people out. Under IC 9-32-9-29, as rewritten by Senate Enrolled Act 65 (2024), a recycler who buys a car younger than 15 model years without either paper commits a Level 6 felony, and IC 9-22-5-18 puts the matching duty on the seller. So we can't take those cars until the paper exists. Tell us on the call what's in the glove box, and we'll confirm the route for your car before a truck is booked. Our guide to selling without a title walks through the BMV side.

From the Cicero Avenue yard into Hammond

Central Hammond is about 16 road miles from the yard, or about 13 miles in a straight line. A truck leaves along Cicero Avenue, rides the Tri-State for a short stretch, then runs east on 147th Street and Sibley Boulevard, both signed IL 83. That road carries it through Calumet City, which was founded in 1893 as West Hammond, before Hohman Avenue and Chicago Street bring it into the middle of the city.

Inside Hammond, two expressways frame most pickups. The Indiana Toll Road (I-90) has Hammond exits at Indianapolis Boulevard, Calumet Avenue and Cline Avenue. The Borman (I-80/94) has four: Calumet Avenue, Indianapolis Boulevard, Kennedy Avenue and Cline Avenue. Name the one nearest you. It helps the driver place your block.

Then there's the address itself. Hammond numbers its houses on Chicago's grid, counted from Madison Street with the leading 1 dropped, which is why most addresses here have four digits; east-west numbers start at the state line. Whiting, Munster and Highland use the same system, so a bare number could sit in any of them. Say "Hammond" with the address and add a cross street. Rather type it? The quote box higher up this page asks for the same details.

Hammond touches several towns we cover. East Chicago lies to its east and shares Indiana's paperwork law, though it gives a wrecked or unplated car on private property 24 hours, against the 30 days in Hammond's junk vehicle ordinance. Lansing borders Hammond on the Illinois side, where the papers follow Illinois rules instead. And if you're curious where the truck sets out from, the Alsip page covers the yard's own village.

Where a Hammond junk car can wait for us

Hammond is mostly houses. Of its homes, 72.8% are single-family detached and 62.4% are owner-occupied, while 13.4% are in blocks of five units or more (Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020 to 2024). Most of the time, then, the car sits on a driveway, beside the garage or at the curb, and each of those spots runs on its own clock.

At the curb

No vehicle may stay on a Hammond street for more than 96 hours in a row without a permit from the police chief (§ 72.007). A car that can't start can't be moved to reset that count. Snow, sweeping and trailers each add a rule of their own, and the questions further down cover them.

On the driveway or in the yard

Two separate parts of the code apply here, and they count differently. The junk vehicle ordinance makes it unlawful to keep a junk car, or its parts, on a home or business lot, where the public can see it, for over 30 days (§ 98.21). The abandoned vehicle chapter is tighter for older cars: one that's 6 or more model years old, mechanically inoperable and visible from public property for over 3 days counts as abandoned, and a temporary cover doesn't make it invisible (§ 106.01).

In practice, an older dead car on a Hammond driveway can be classed as abandoned long before the 30-day junk limit arrives. If yours fits that description, call sooner rather than later.

Apartment lots, permit streets and repair shops

Some Hammond blocks are resident-only parking zones, where a resident sticker has to sit on the lower left of the rear windshield (§ 72.013). If the dead car is on one of those streets, or in an apartment or condo lot, mention it; for a lot, get the manager's or association's okay first and we'll load there. A car at a repair shop is just as simple once the shop knows we're coming.

One more city rule ties into all this: anyone living in Hammond for 60 days or more must register their vehicles under IC 9-18-2-1, and the city can impound junked or abandoned ones at the owner's expense (§ 72.017). A car you've stopped registering is a car worth selling.

Hammond curbside questions

A city inspector has spotted the junk car in my Hammond driveway. How long do I have?

Usually 10 days. Once a junk car has been visible to the public for over 30 days, §§ 98.22 and 98.23 let an inspector order it removed within 10 days; if that order is ignored, the city tows it at your cost and holds it for at least 60 days. Selling inside that window keeps the car's value with you instead of the impound lot.

Hammond's mayor declared a snow emergency and my car won't start. What now?

Call early in the day. During an emergency (§ 72.008) cars park only on the even-numbered side on even dates and the odd side on odd dates, each day running noon to noon, and nothing may stay in an alley. Violators are towed. We can often collect the same day, but we won't name an hour.

My junk car is sitting on a trailer in Hammond. Can the trailer stay on the street until you arrive?

No. Hammond bars automobile trailers from being parked or stored on any street or alley (§ 72.011). Keep it on your own lot or driveway, and mention the trailer when you call so the driver comes ready for it.

Street sweeping signs just went up on my Hammond block. Is the car in trouble?

By morning, yes. The city posts those signs by 4 p.m. the day before, cars have to be gone by 7 a.m., and anything left after that can be towed (§ 72.009). If yours won't move under its own power, ring us as soon as you see them.
