Top dollar for Joliet junk cars, on either side of the river

Who pays top dollar for a Joliet junk car?

Top Dollar Junk Cars does. We buy wrecked, dead and scrap cars across Joliet, on both banks of the Des Plaines River and out to the far west side in Kendall County. Each car is priced on its own details, towing costs you nothing, and we settle up at pickup while the car is loaded.

Joliet is the Will County seat and, with 150,362 residents counted by the 2020 Census, the third-largest city in Illinois. It spreads across nine townships, more than any other city in the state, and reaches into Kendall County. Of all the suburbs and city areas we cover, it's one of the farther stops, about 28 road miles from the yard and about 21 miles in a straight line. What follows is a Joliet pickup in order, from your phone call to being paid.

A Joliet junk car pickup, step by step

  1. The call. Give us the address and which side of the Des Plaines it's on. Locals divide the city into the west side and the east side; "Central Joliet" means west of the river and east of I-55, and the far west side is the city land in Kendall County. Then the car: year, make, model and what's wrong with it. If the title is gone, run through the other papers you've kept, maybe a registration from an earlier year, a bill of sale, your insurance card. Illinois rules govern whether they'll do for a scrap sale. We go over that with you during the same call, and selling with no title explains more. The phones are staffed 6am to 9pm, seven days a week, or you can start with the quote form up top. The figure we give you doesn't expire, so there's no rush to say yes.
  2. The drive from Cicero Avenue. From our yard in Alsip the truck runs about 6.1 miles south on Cicero Avenue, takes I-57 for about a mile, then follows I-80 west for about 18 miles. I-80 has six Joliet exits, from Houbolt Road (127) to Briggs Street (134), and the run to the middle of town comes off at Chicago Street (132), which carries US-6, IL-53 and old Route 66, for about the last 0.7 miles. Closer to I-55? Say so. Its Joliet exits are Jefferson Street (253) and Plainfield Road (257), and Joliet Regional Airport, off Jefferson near I-55, makes a handy marker.
  3. Where the truck stops. Downtown, IL-53 splits into a one-way pair, Scott Street northbound and Ottawa Street southbound, and US-30 runs east on Cass Street, so tell us which way your street flows if you're near the center. If your block is posted "parking by permit only" under the residential permit program (§ 19-151), mention the signs. Once 2 inches or more falls within 24 hours, street parking stops until plowing is done (§ 19-142), so on a snowy day we may load from the driveway rather than the curb.
  4. Loading. The city's housing is 69.5% detached houses and 9.4% attached ones, with 20.5% in buildings that hold two homes or more, and owners occupy 73.7% of the ones lived in (Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020 to 2024). Expect the driver to load from your driveway or the street in front of the house. In an apartment lot, the manager should hear about the pickup from you first. For a car parked at a repair shop, give the shop a heads-up about the pickup and pay what you owe there. No keys, flat tires, a gutted interior: tell us, and we'll still buy it.
  5. Payment. We pay you right there as the car is loaded: cash, or Zelle, Cash App or a similar digital transfer, and no towing charge is taken off. Leaving without a car? Metra's Rock Island and Heritage Corridor lines both end at the Joliet Transportation Center, and Amtrak stops at Joliet Union Station.

The Joliet rule that decides how long a junk car can stay

We found no citywide overnight ban in Joliet's general parking rules. The section that matters most for a dead car is § 19-233: nobody may store an abandoned or inoperable vehicle on any property in the city unless the zoning specifically allows it. Wrecking and junk businesses are exempt. A few details make it stricter than it first sounds.

What counts as inoperable

The definition in § 19-232 has two halves. A vehicle qualifies if it's dilapidated, wrecked, dismantled or disassembled so that it can't be driven legally or safely. It also qualifies if it lacks valid displayed plates or registration, with expired or suspended registration counting. So a car that starts fine but has lapsed registration can land under the same rule as one with no engine.

Who gets the ticket

The citation can go to the property owner, the vehicle owner, a tenant or a lessee. If you rent, both you and your landlord have a stake in seeing the car gone, so talk to them before the pickup.

How quickly it moves

When a dead car sits on private land in plain sight of the street, the city sends a notice of intent to tow, and § 3-150 gives the owner 3 days to ask for an emergency review or 7 days to request an administrative hearing. On the street it's quicker. § 19-138 caps any vehicle on a public street, alley or public way at 48 consecutive hours, and under § 19-235 a car abandoned on a highway can be removed 24 hours after a "police tow" notice goes on it; on other public property the notice period is 7 days, in writing.

In short, a dead car at a Joliet curb has two days, and one kept in a driveway is already outside § 19-233 unless zoning allows it.

Next to Joliet, different rules

Rules change at each city line. Bolingbrook, the second-largest town in Will County after Joliet, allows a dead car 5 days in the open and has a 2 to 6am street parking ban. Naperville, one place below Joliet on the state's population list, keeps cars off its streets and alleys from 2 to 5am.

Closer to the yard, the I-80 leg of the Joliet run follows the southern border of Orland Park. Southeast of Orland, Tinley Park's no-parking hours are 2 to 5am, every night of the week. We reach both off Cicero Avenue by 159th Street, which carries US-6, the same highway the Joliet run finishes on along Chicago Street.

Questions about Joliet pickups

My car still runs but the registration expired. Does Joliet treat it as inoperable?

It can. Under § 19-232 a vehicle without valid displayed plates or registration, expired or suspended included, meets the definition, and § 19-233 bars storing one on any property unless zoning allows it. If the car is done as a car, we'll price it for scrap like any other.

I rent in Joliet and the car is in my landlord's lot. Who gets the ticket?

Possibly either of you. § 19-233 lets the citation go to the property owner, the vehicle owner, a tenant or a lessee. Tell the landlord a pickup is coming, then describe for us which row or space the car is in.

Is my street exempt from Joliet's snow parking rule?

Only a few stretches are. § 19-142 exempts the streets from Raynor Avenue to Center Street between Mason Avenue (Route 30, Plainfield Road) and Buell Avenue, the same span again between Jefferson and Marion Streets, and Pine Street from Western Avenue to Division Street. Elsewhere, 2 inches in 24 hours clears the street until plowing is done.

The city put a notice of intent to tow on my car. How long do I have?

If it's on private land and visible from the street, § 3-150 gives you 3 days to ask for an emergency review or 7 days to request an administrative hearing. If you'd rather sell than contest it, call us; a same-day visit is often possible.
