Gary junk cars bought for top dollar, Glen Park to Miller Beach

Can I get top dollar for my junk car in Gary, Indiana?

Yes, anywhere in the city. Top Dollar Junk Cars collects scrap, wrecked and non-running cars from Glen Park, Tolleston, Miller Beach and the streets off Broadway, and pays top dollar based on the car in front of us. There's no charge for the tow, and you're paid at pickup, in cash or digitally.

Of the Indiana towns with their own page in our list of pickup areas, Gary is the longest run from the yard. It also has the bluntest code on cars that don't run, so the code comes first.

Gary's ordinances on dead and junked cars

Two parts of the city code matter most to a seller: the abandoned vehicle article in Chapter 18 and the snow emergency article in Chapter 40.

SectionThe ruleWhat it means for a junk car
Sec. 18-195No abandoning a vehicle on public or private property, or leaving one so it appears abandoned; no partially dismantled, nonoperating, wrecked or junked vehicle on any public or private premisesA driveway or back lot is covered, not just the street
Sec. 18-194Adopts the state's definitions from IC 9-13-2Indiana's wording decides what counts as abandoned here
Sec. 18-196The department of development and planning handles removal, storage and disposal under IC 9-22-1Removal is a city job, run under state law
Sec. 18-197Caps police-ordered tow and storage charges; unclaimed cars are sold after 20 days or sent to a scrap yardA towed car can be gone for good in under three weeks
Sec. 40-385During a snow emergency, any vehicle parked, stalled, incapable of moving or left unattended in breach of the rules is towed or impounded"Incapable of moving" is in the text, so a car that won't start gets no pass

Put together, the safest place for a Gary junk car is on our truck. Until then, the details below cover where it can wait.

Where we park and load in Gary

The road in

It's about 27 road miles from our Alsip storefront, about 21 in a straight line. The truck runs the Tri-State to its end, then the Kingery and the Borman (I-80/94) east, and leaves on Richard G. Hatcher Boulevard for West 15th Avenue. Inside the city, Broadway (SR 53) is the main north-south street through downtown; 4th and 5th Avenues carry US 12 and US 20; Ridge Road is US 6 Business; and Chicago Avenue is SR 312. I-65 and Cline Avenue cross the city too.

A warning for the far west side: 165th Street between Hammond and Gary has been walled off from Gary since 1981. If the car is near that line, give us a different cross street.

Snow emergencies

Gary's mayor can declare a snow emergency with as little as 1 inch on the ground, and it's announced by press release (Sec. 40-383). Once it's on, the designated snow routes must be empty, and the code leaves the list of those routes to the mayor rather than printing it. Every other street gets a daytime alternate-side ban (Sec. 40-384). A dead car can't switch sides. Call before the press release, not after.

Cleaning signs and decal blocks

Where signs say a street, alley or gutter is being swept, cleaned or repaired, parking stops (Sec. 40-293, in the streets chapter). Some blocks are reserved for residents with a parking decal (Secs. 40-358 to 40-361), among them the 3500 and 3600 blocks of Washington, Adams and Jefferson Streets. Tell us if yours is parked on one of them, so the driver knows where to stop.

Houses, lots and empty homes

Of Gary's homes, 71.9% are detached single-family houses and owners live in 49.1% of them (Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020 to 2024). Separately, the 2020 Census counted 23.2% of the city's 37,274 housing units as vacant. So the car may be behind a rented house, at an empty one or on a vacant lot as easily as on an owner's driveway. Wherever it is, the seller has to be the person who can sign it over, and we pay that person at pickup, in cash or through Cash App, Zelle or another digital payment. One visit can take several cars from the same address. Cars at a repair shop are fine too, once the shop has agreed.

If this is your last car, the South Shore Line's Gary Metro Center downtown and the Gary Public Transportation Corp. buses are the fallback.

Next to Gary

Gary is T-shaped, with the lakefront along the top. At its northwest corner it meets Hammond and East Chicago; East Chicago allows only 24 hours for an unplated or wrecked vehicle kept on private land, while Hammond's junk vehicle rule allows 30 days in public view. Highland also shares a border with Gary, and there the police place a 5-day sticker before towing. Munster doesn't touch Gary, but it sits just south of the Borman, which our trucks pass on the way in.

Griffith, Hobart, Merrillville and Lake Station, on Gary's southern and eastern edges, are in our pickup area as well. Every one of these runs begins at the same Cicero Avenue yard, which our Alsip page describes. Weighing our figure against another buyer's? Read whether junk car buyers negotiate first; our offer doesn't expire, so there's time. Or start with the quote form on this page.

Indiana title law when selling a Gary junk car

Here's the line we can't cross. In Indiana, a buyer who takes a car under 15 model years old without its title, and without a BMV certificate of authority, commits a Level 6 felony (IC 9-32-9-29, in its 2024 form after SEA 65); IC 9-22-5-18 is the seller's matching duty.

Older cars aren't free of paper either. Whatever the year, a sale to a recycler needs the title, a BMV duplicate ($15) or a certificate of authority (State Form 55018, $4 to apply), and the certificate is reserved for cars at the 15-model-year mark or older. Both fees appear on the BMV fee chart. Read us your papers on the call and we'll confirm which route fits. More in our no-title guide.

Questions about Gary pickups

A snow emergency is on in Gary and my dead car is parked at the curb. Will it be towed?

On a designated snow route it can be towed and impounded. On other streets the alternate-side ban runs 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the east and south sides kept clear on even-numbered days and the north and west on odd ones (Sec. 40-384). Ring us the day it's announced; a same-day pickup is often possible.

My car is in Black Oak. Is that Gary?

Yes. Black Oak, in the far southwest near the Borman's Burr Street exit, was annexed by Gary in the 1970s, even though it still has Hammond phone numbers. The free tow covers it like any other Gary address.

What happens to a car Gary tows and nobody claims?

Under Sec. 18-197 it's sold after 20 days or sent to an automobile scrap yard. Meanwhile the owner faces the tow, capped at $350 for police-ordered tows, plus storage at up to $20 a day, itself capped at $350. Selling to us first puts the car's scrap value in your hand instead.
