Top dollar for junk cars in Oak Lawn, whatever the season

Do I get top dollar for an Oak Lawn junk car, tow included?

Yes. Top Dollar Junk Cars takes Oak Lawn junk cars for top dollar, whether the car died on a side street off 95th or has sat in a driveway for a year. The tow is on us, and payment comes at pickup: cash, Zelle or Cash App. Our yard is about 3.6 road miles south, down Cicero Avenue.

The run up from the Alsip yard is short: about 2.5 miles north on Cicero Avenue, then just over half a mile west on 99th Street. The straight-line distance is about 3 miles. Oak Lawn has its place in the directory of every town we serve. This page is laid out by the calendar, because here the date and the depth of the snow decide where a dead car is allowed to sit.

Snow rules in Oak Lawn that a dead car can't obey

Oak Lawn's snow rules switch on early. Two of them start with a single inch on the ground, and all of them assume you can start the car and move it.

Odd and even days

With an inch or more of snow down, § 11-5-5(B) splits residential streets by house number. On even-numbered days nobody may park on the even side, which is the north or west side of the street. On odd days the odd side, south or east, is closed. Each day's ban runs from 6am until 3am the following morning. So a non-starter sits on the wrong side every second day for as long as the snow lasts. Snow routes are left out of this rule. They get a tougher one.

Snow routes

On a posted snow route, § 11-5-5(D) stops all parking once an inch has fallen and keeps it stopped until the street is cleared; a car left there is towed at the owner's expense. 95th Street is a snow route across the whole village, from Pulaski Road to Harlem Avenue. So are stretches of Austin, Kostner and Menard Avenues and of 91st, 103rd and 107th Streets, with more listed in the Oak Lawn parking code.

Snow removal emergencies

The worst storms fall under § 11-5-5(A), the snow removal emergency: snow coming down at an inch an hour and reaching 4 inches. Then no street parking is allowed anywhere for 24 hours, or until the plows have been through.

What does that mean for you? If a dead car is at the curb and snow is forecast, call before it falls, not after. Same-day pickup is often possible, but no one can promise an hour in a storm. Tell us which side of the street the car is on and whether the street is a snow route, and the driver will know what to expect.

Spring to fall: plates, permits and the 7-day clock

Once the snow melts, the overnight question is easier than most people expect. § 11-5-6(A) bans parking on Oak Lawn streets and alleys from 1 to 7am, but first-division (passenger) vehicles are exempt, and so are non-commercial vehicles that residents own and park near home. A dead sedan outside your own house isn't breaking the overnight rule.

A work vehicle is another story. Commercial vehicles can't park on the street from 1 to 7am, with a single exception: one Class B flat-weight vehicle near its owner's home (§ 11-5-6(B)). If the van or pickup you want gone wears commercial plates, mention it on the call.

Expired plates

Here's the rule that trips up cars that quit months ago. Under § 11-5-15, no vehicle may park on a public street, an alley or a village lot without a valid, current state registration plate and sticker. The village's own vehicle-license chapter was repealed (Ord. 18-10-25), so state registration is the one that counts. If the car is at the curb, leave the plates on until the truck is there. Our checklist for handing a car to a junkyard covers what to do with the plates and keys.

Abandoned, by the code's definition

Oak Lawn defines it broadly. Under § 11-10-1 a vehicle is abandoned when it's in disrepair and undrivable, when it lacks a current annual license or tag, or when it has gone 7 days running without moving and looks deserted. Any one of those is enough.

Your own land doesn't change that. Under § 11-10-2, an abandoned vehicle on the owner's private property is a nuisance, an unlicensed car left unmoved for 7 days qualifies, and after 7 days the police chief may order it removed. The general nuisance list agrees, naming inoperable or abandoned vehicles not kept in a garage (§ 8-1-3(R)). The garage is the one exemption, then. If your car is in the driveway instead, selling it ends the problem. Tell us what paperwork you have, whether you still have the title or only a registration card; Illinois rules settle which ones a scrap sale can use, and we'll confirm it on the call. Our page on selling a car without the title explains more.

Permit blocks and apartment lots

Some blocks in the R-1, R-2 and R-3 districts are parking for residents with a permit only (§ 11-5-4). If yours is one, say so when you call. Most of the village is houses: single-unit buildings hold 68.9% of homes, and in 82.5% of occupied homes the owner is the one living there (Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020 to 2024). Still, 22.9% are in apartment buildings of 5 or more units. If your car is in one of those lots, get the management's agreement first, and then we can load it there.

Landmarks make directions quicker. Advocate Christ Medical Center, a Level I trauma center, is in the village. Downtown is the stretch of 95th Street between Tulley Avenue and 55th Court, rebuilt from 2002 around the Oak Lawn Metra station on the SouthWest Service.

95th Street (US-12/US-20) also ties Oak Lawn to two neighbors. Head east and you're in Evergreen Park, where the alternate-side snow rule waits for 2 inches in 24 hours rather than one inch on the ground. Head west into Bridgeview, where 95th has interchanges with the Tri-State and Harlem Avenue, and the village bans parking on its streets once an inch of snow is down.

Nights work differently in Blue Island. Its 2 to 6am ban on residential streets exempts cars with a city sticker, not passenger cars as a class, so a dead car there without a sticker is in breach every night.

Our own yard is in Alsip, just down Cicero Avenue. Prefer to send the details in writing? Start with the price-my-car form; it asks about the car first, then where it is.

Oak Lawn sellers ask us

It snowed overnight and the car that died is sitting on the wrong side of my Oak Lawn street. What now?

Call as early in the day as you can. With an inch or more down, the odd and even rule in § 11-5-5(B) means a car that can't move ends up on the closed side every other day. Same-day pickup is often possible, although we can't promise a time.

My Oak Lawn car has expired plates, but it's in my own driveway. Does the village care?

It can. § 11-10-1 treats a car without a current annual license or tag as abandoned, and § 11-10-2 lets the police chief order an unlicensed car that hasn't moved for 7 days off private property. A garage keeps it off the village nuisance list; a driveway doesn't.

How do I know if my street is an Oak Lawn snow route?

Look for the posted signs, or check the list in the village parking code. Besides 95th Street, segments of 52nd Avenue, Oak Park Avenue, Keeler Avenue, Kenton Avenue and 109th Street are on it. On a snow route, an inch of snow ends parking until the street has been cleared.
